Painted Mannequin
I painted this mannequin in acrylic and did the calligraphy with a 1/2mm pen and sumi ink. It is for a doctor, so rather than make any medical mistakes, I just used the folk terminology for the bones of the body.

Just Stay in the Center
"Just Stay in the Center of the Circle" quotations from the TaoTe Ching.
Sumi, acrylic, gouache and pastels on paper. S. Sanders
Mike Gold, from American Greetings, was in Phoenix this last weekend to give us his "A Tao Portfolio" workshop. We experimented widely with color, composition and lettering design. He stretched us to create contemporary letterforms, treating them as elements of line, shape and form, leaving legibility up to the more enterprising of readers. He is a generous and creative teacher. In the presence of such a kind and knowledgeable guide, we learned much about design, as well as the gentle teachings of the Tao. I recommend any class he teaches. Thanks, Mike!

Wedding Program
These wedding programs took the bridesmaids hours to complete with antique ribbon from the bride's grandmother. On the wedding day they were left behind and had to be rescued by our amazing wedding planner, Rhonda Harsh-Haynes at the last minute from the locked Bed and Breakfast. Well worth everyone's effort, I think, because they were so beautiful.
The back lists all the names of the wedding party, etc. They were printed on heavy Classic Crest Laid paper. The top image is a hand cut rubber stamp of the couple's wedding 'logo': the grove of Sycamore trees where their marriage took place.

Calligraphy in Pink
Pink calligraphy to match baby shower invitations. I enjoyed doing this job. As I wrote, I thought about these people in Japan, hoping their party would bring welcome relief to the trauma their country is enduring.

The Picnic Guild is a wonderful new company that delivers gourmet picnics to select wineries in the Santa Cruz Mountains. I was honored to develop their new logo. You can visit their site here: http://www.thepicnicguild.com/ If you don't live in California, maybe you have a friend who does. You can order picnic baskets as gifts through their store. Yum!

In Memory of Margie Milas
This quotation is from a wonderful woman who among other achievements, helped make Olin College of Engineering a reality. These gentle, pithy words were the inspiration for the building of Olin. Mrs. Margie Milas just passed away, and the world will miss her presence. Our sympathy goes out to Larry, her husband (Olin's Founding Chairman of the Board of Trustees), their three children, and their grandchildren.

Painting Water 1
I recently had the opportunity to take a workshop with Doug Oliver. Over the course of three days, Doug demonstrated and taught his method of painting water with acrylics. He works quickly, with many layers of paint as he draws out the light and shapes and motion of his subject. It was fascinating to see him work. Doug is a generous teacher, excellent artist, and a man of warmth and compassion. It was a good three days. Here is the waterfall painting I did under his watchful eye. "Secret Falls" acrylic on canvas, 20x16.
